What is swollen veins under tongue?

Swollen veins under the tongue, also known as varicosities, are not uncommon and typically benign. These veins can appear as small, raised bumps or larger, twisting veins that are visible beneath the surface of the tongue.

The cause of swollen veins under the tongue is not fully understood, but they are generally considered to be a normal part of aging. Researchers speculate that the use and movement of the tongue over time can cause the veins to dilate and become more visible.

Although generally harmless, swollen veins under the tongue can cause discomfort when eating or talking. Treatment is usually not required and the condition can often resolve on its own. However, in some cases, a medical professional may recommend removal of the affected veins if they cause persistent discomfort or interfere with normal function.
